Rohypnol easily foments drug dependence in those who use it beyond the prescribed duration or dosage. In fact, dependency is one of the primary side effects of the medication on both a physical and psychological level. When people quit, it becomes clear whether or not they became dependent on the drug during use due to withdrawal, which mainly presents in the form of seizures, psychosis, insomnia, and anxiety. Benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome is essentially consistent with these same symptoms.
Rebound insomnia is also a definite possibility with Rohypnol withdrawal. It’s worse than baseline insomnia, and it usually happens right after patients terminate their use of flunitrazepam. Flunitrazepam, or Rohypnol, is prescription treatment for insomnia, and it’s often also used to support anesthesia. Like other hypnotics, it’s usually only ever prescribed for short-term use. Exceptions would be for those diagnosed with chronic insomnia, but that call is usually made at the discretion of the prescribing physician. The drug is only used at all in a handful of countries, including the U.S., U.K. and Australia.

A Swedish doctor infamously abducted and sequestered a woman in a soundproof bunker in Helsinki by giving her strawberries laced with Rohypnol. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison as of 2016 according to the Associated Press.
