Xanax Addiction

Alprazolam binds to the GABAA benzodiazepine receptor site so easily that it’s considered to carry a high risk of abuse. The substance also has high potency and rapid onset for the body’s and brain’s abilities to build up a tolerance for the medication. The minority of Xanax users who actually escalate their dose statistically also have a history of alcoholism or some other substance use disorder, and long-term benzodiazepine use doesn’t usually require dose escalation. Nevertheless, most Xanax use is actually not recreational.

Those considered to be at high risk for the development of dependence and addiction are usually those with a history of substance use disorders. This may even include a significant family history thereof. Others considered to statistically correlate with acute risks of addictive behavior for alprazolam are those with a borderline personality disorder.

Intended Use of Xanax

The point of alprazolam is to manage anxiety disorders, panic disorders and nausea that comes from chemotherapy. This is the case for panic disorders regardless of whether or not patients have agoraphobia, which is the often arbitrary fear that one’s environment isn’t safe. Xanax and other benzodiazepines are often used in combination with other recreational drugs in order to counteract the dysphoric effects of psychedelic drugs like LSD or the agitation and insomnia of stimulants like amphetamines, cocaine and ecstasy.

How Xanax Is Taken

Xanax is almost always taken as a tablet and swallowed to ingest it. Cases in which alprazolam was injected into the bloodstream ultimately coincided with damage to blood vessels, embolization and the decay of muscle tissue.
