Cocaine is an illicit stimulant drug extracted from the coca bush leaf. It’s usually snorted in a white powder form and can be combined with other drugs (like heroin) to form more potent mixtures. Ethanol (the compound that gives liquor its power) can modify the cocaine as it’s being metabolized to form a different, more dangerous compound called cocaethylene.
Cocaine is processed out of the coca leaf through a days-long process that involves chemicals like gasoline to create something called a cocaine “paste”. Crack cocaine is named for the sound it makes when heated in a crack pipe. Smoking crack cocaine usually affects the individual much faster than snorting powder.
The psychoactive alkaloid that gives cocaine its properties may have developed in the plant to keep pests from killing the bush. Cocaine in its base form, the coca leaf, was chewed by the Incas as a productivity drug and likely had use as an entheogen. Cocaine was used as a base ingredient in Coca-Cola Classic until the US government told them to stop.
The drug itself wasn’t isolated until 1857 by the chemist Albert Nieman, who named it and observed that it numbed his tongue. Cocaine became super popular as a drink additive for a while until the Feds came down on Coca-Cola, which triggered a chilling effect on the industry.
It’s popularity as a recreational drug has declined significantly in the years since meth and ecstasy took over the black markets. This is effectively why figures like Pablo Escobar went out of business, but during its heyday, up to a quarter of Americans admitted to having tried cocaine at least once.
Cocaine makes the user euphoric; as a vasoconstrictor, cocaine makes your blood pressure increase along with the heart rate. Cocaine is referred to as “the perfect heart attack drug”. Seizures or strokes can occur when taking cocaine due to how it affects the body. Cocaine binging becomes necessary due to growing tolerance, leading to the stereotypical wild club nights emblematic of the 70s and 80s excess. Along with the euphoria of cocaine insufflation, the user can get aggressive or paranoid.
In the state of Massachusetts, 6.98% of those in the 18- to 25-year-old range have done cocaine at least once in the last year. In terms of adults, only 2.40% of those over the age of 17 have done cocaine during the same time period.
