Meth addiction detox in Columbus

Landmark Recovery of Columbus is proud to offer the best meth detoxing services to help you get back the life you deserve. Meth detox can be tough, but we make sure the process is as easy as possible for all our patients. We want to save as many people as possible from the scourge of addiction over the next century, starting with you.

What is meth?

Meth is a type of amphetamine compound. Adderall, the most used ADHD medication, is one of many compounds chemically related to meth by the simple virtue of being a type of “substituted phenylethylamine” (the backbone of the molecular structure), even though it doesn’t have the same potency or effects. Meth is extremely potent compared to basic amphetamines and is usually taken at massive doses by those who’ve developed a tolerance to the drug.

Heavy users of meth will binge on the drug for days at a time without eating or sleeping. The drug can be made from caustic materials found around the house; sometimes meth labs experience catastrophic explosions due to flammable chemical gasses building up in a small space. Meth raises the blood pressure and heart rate of the user. Ventricular and white matter volume is increased, and grey matter and hippocampus volume is decreased, when meth is abused consistently. The effects meth has on the brain are very similar to Alzheimer’s. Meth is more potent and longer lasting than cocaine, making it a more popular street drug.

Meth as a recreational drug of choice is a recent social development since the 1990s. Fulfilling a desire for a cheaper and faster-acting alternative to cocaine, meth is arguably the most recent major illicit drug to hit the streets and achieve household name status. Amphetamines, the drug family that methamphetamine falls in, were first synthesized in 1887 by Lazard Edeleanu, a Romanian chemist working in Berlin, Germany. The compound he discovered was originally named phenylisopropylamine. The first amphetamines were related to the compound ephedrine and were used to treat asthma.

During World War II, different types of amphetamines were given to soldiers on both sides of the war, likely including an early form of methamphetamine some time before we truly understood the power of these substances. It is commonly (and correctly) stated that Adolf Hitler was addicted to some wild combination of amphetamines, opiates, and other stimulants during the last part of his horrifyingly awful life.

Addiction to meth is quick and almost entirely guaranteed. Meth induces negative feelings about the drug after the first time it’s been tried; the tolerance experienced is rapid and massive, but those who are addicted will keep coming back. There is literally zero upside to using meth—it will rot your brain. Meth also rots teeth rapidly and causes a dental phenomenon called “meth mouth”. Smoked “Ice” causes a near-immediate “blast-off” with absorption lasting for about 4 hours; the half-life of ice meth is around 11 hours.

Meth abuse in Ohio

In the state of Ohio, the 18- to 25-year-old group had the highest rate of meth abuse at 0.97%; this is the percentage of that age group’s population that used meth at least once in the last year. The total adult population use rate in a single year sits at 0.9% of the population of Ohio.
