Indianapolis Partial Hospitalization Programs for Substance Abuse

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP), also known as day treatment programs, combine inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment services. They are structured programs that run for several hours each day, often three to five days per week. The structure is like that of inpatient rehab, only the patient is not required to reside at the addiction treatment center. Partial hospitalization is a good option for someone who is dealing with an addiction, but stable enough to avoid temptations that may arise in their home environment.

What is Partial Hospitalization?

A partial hospitalization program is one that allows individuals who are seeking treatment for substance abuse to have flexibility and control over their treatment schedule. It offers the same treatment as an inpatient or residential treatment program would, but with the ability to come in when it is convenient for the patient so long as they meet the required number of hours of treatment per week.

At Landmark Recovery of Indianapolis, each patient is given a specialized treatment plan that is tailored to their specific needs, regardless of which program they enter. Compared to inpatient rehab, patients enrolled in partial hospitalization have more meetings to attend during the week, but they are not required to reside at the treatment center for the duration of their program.

What to Expect from Partial Hospitalization

In a partial hospitalization program, the schedule structure is the same as one in a residential program. The only difference is that patients in the partial hospitalization program do not have to reside at the treatment center full-time. This is ideal for individuals who have a stronger case of addiction than those who are involved in an outpatient program, but still cannot commit to residing at a treatment center full-time for whatever reason – whether it be because of a non-compliant work schedule, they are unable to find childcare, or for many other possible reasons.

A partial hospitalization program still provides intense treatment for alcohol and substance abuse but is more flexible in terms of allowing the patient to remain committed to their responsibilities outside of treatment. There are more visits and sessions required of partial hospitalization patients to attend during treatment as well.

How Long Does Partial Hospitalization Last?

As always, the length of treatment for any program varies from person to person.

The average stay at Landmark Recovery of Indianapolis is 30-45 days, so partial hospitalization is designed to last this long as well. However, the difference is in how many hours of treatment are required. Visits can range from four to eight hours a day and require an average of five visits per week, depending on the needs of the patient, their availability, and the severity of their addiction.

Partial Hospitalization vs Inpatient Hospitalization

Partial hospitalization requires the patient to attend the addiction treatment center part-time, completing a certain requirement of hours of treatment per week. Inpatient treatment requires the patient to reside at the addiction treatment center full-time for approximately a month.

Partial hospitalization treatment is what is considered a “happy medium” between inpatient rehab and outpatient rehab, where a patient isn’t required to spend any time at the treatment center but is required to attend therapy sessions and meetings throughout the week, and sometimes patients are required to take medication in this program to prevent strong withdrawal symptoms.

If you’re curious as to whether partial hospitalization or residential treatment is the right option for you, or if you or someone you know is seeking addiction treatment, call Landmark Recovery of Indianapolis at 317-449-8029 to talk to a recovery specialist today.
