What is your mental health, exactly? It involves your thinking, emotions, and behaviors. It also affects how you make choices, relate to other people, and handle stress. Alcohol and drug use impacts all of these things, and — in simple terms — addiction is the relationship between the substances you are abusing and your brain.
For this reason, taking care of your mental health is important for addiction recovery and living your best life. For some, it’s creating healthier thought patterns and coping skills. For others, it’s learning how to navigate life despite family history, trauma, or psychological challenges.
No matter where you are in your understanding of your personal mental health, there are professionals, support groups, and organizations who can come alongside you.
