Drug Addiction in Oklahoma
Addiction, or substance use disorder, is a disease of the brain characterized by the persistent and uncontrollable use of drugs or alcohol despite resulting harm and adverse consequences. 1 Drug abuse and addiction is a major public health concern for the state of Oklahoma. It is estimated that more than a quarter of a million Oklahoma residents, or more than 8% of the state’s population, suffer from some form of addiction. 2
The current opioid epidemic that is ravaging millions of people across the nation has hit Oklahoma especially hard. Oklahoma leads the nation in prescription opioid medication misuse, 3 and around 1 in 143 Oklahomans currently suffers from an addiction to prescription opioids. 2 This prevalent opioid abuse has led to devastating consequences for the residents of Oklahoma. On average, one Oklahoman dies every day from an opioid overdose. 4
Unfortunately, opioids are not the only drugs that are afflicting Oklahoma residents. By far, the most abused drug in Oklahoma is alcohol. Nearly 1 in 4 Oklahomans report recent binge drinking (within the past month), and around 1 in 17 currently suffers from alcoholism. 2 Heroin, crystal meth, and methamphetamine are other drugs commonly abused in Oklahoma. Overall, about 1 in 34 Oklahomans suffers from an addiction to some type of illicit drug. 2
The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services reports that nearly 181,000 residents of Oklahoma are in dire need of addiction treatment. 5 Tragically, only about 1 out of 10 Oklahomans in need of drug treatment actually receive any form of treatment. 2

The first, and often most difficult, step in recovery from drug addiction is detoxification (or detox). This critical process involves flushing out all traces of drugs from your body and must be completed before the start of any rehab therapy. Detox can be especially uncomfortable due to a variety of negative effects caused by drug withdrawal. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration identifies the following as common withdrawal symptoms for most drugs: 6
Landmark Recovery offers a medically supervised drug detox program at our drug addiction center that can manage the physical and emotional symptoms of withdrawal, keeping you safe and comfortable during the entire detox process. Our specially trained clinicians will closely monitor you around-the-clock, looking out for potentially dangerous complications that can lead to disorientation, seizures, coma, or death. You may also be given certain medications that can help relieve severe pain and discomfort and reduce the strong cravings that can be experienced during drug withdrawal.
Following the completion of detox, which will usually last for 3-5 days, you will enter into the individualized care stage of recovery. Here you will participate in a combination of evidence-based therapies that will include components such as medication-assisted treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy, individual and group counseling, family therapy, meditation and mindfulness therapies, and health and wellness education. During your drug addiction treatment we will determine the underlying root causes for your addiction and teach you new skills and behaviors that will help to control cravings and prevent relapse.
