At Landmark Recovery, we’re proud to offer safe and effective heroin detox treatment at our facility right here in Richmond. Our treatment process is evidence-based and well-constructed all the way through to maximize its effectiveness for every single patient that walks through our door.
Coming from the poppy plant, heroin is an opioid substance that’s been around for a very long time historically. Heroin is normally seen in a powder form that can be heated and injected by the user. Users can be at severe risk for HIV due to needle sharing in the recreational drug community.
Heroin can be used in multiple other ways, including snorting, ingesting, and smoking in addition to combinations made with other drugs like cocaine (known as “Speedball”). “Black tar” heroin is a cheaper, risky, “dirty” version of heroin with higher amounts of impurities that color the product. Synthetic opioids, like fentanyl or methadone, present a large amount of risk to heroin users due to being unknowingly present in doses, causing a much lower threshold for overdosing.
In Virginia, only 0.3% of residents above the age of 11 have used heroin in the past year alone. The highest-using population, 18- to 25-year-olds, has a use rate of 0.52% in a single year. Virginia’s use might be relatively low compared to some areas in the US, but anything above zero is a tragedy that can be prevented. The heroin overdose count in Virginia during 2019 was 532, with 852 overdosing from synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Luckily, these numbers are plateauing or otherwise declining in general.
Treatment for illicit drug use disorders across most statistical age groups is around 2.8%, with around 2.5% of additional Virginians needing treatment but not seeking it out. This leaves us with the task of treating all unreached individuals in the state, which we take on as our mission.
Heroin withdrawal can be very rough and causes many different symptoms in users depending on the severity of their use. Cold sweats, insomnia, and restlessness can be present during withdrawals. One thing Landmark does to ensure the detoxing process goes as smoothly as possible is make medication-assisted therapy available to patients with severe withdrawal. Landmark offers both residential and outpatient treatment paths depending on the level of medical need a patient has.
By making both therapy and counseling available in different forms, we aim to lessen the chances of relapse and reinforce the recovery lifestyle. Our alumni program is robust and has a national network of recovered individuals to maximize the amount of post-treatment recovery available to you.
