Inpatient rehab, also known as residential treatment, is a recovery program where a patient struggling with an addiction to drugs or alcohol stays at an addiction treatment center. It’s a common and proven program to help people recover from a substance use disorder.
At Praxis of South Bend by Landmark Recovery, our inpatient rehab program equips patients with the skills needed to obtain long-term sobriety by offering a secluded, controlled environment without the interference of outside forces. This helps you avoid the stress and triggers of the “real world” to gain control over cravings that could lead to a relapse.
Inpatient rehab is probably what comes to mind when you picture drug or alcohol “rehab.” It provides the isolation and focus needed for people dealing with an addiction to learn how to live without using a particular substance while offering the opportunity for structure and learning to be integrated into an individual’s daily routine. On average, a patient will spend about a month (30-35 days) as a resident in an addiction treatment program. Some patients must first go through Landmark’s medical detox program before entering inpatient rehab, which is why the length of stay varies from person to person. It all depends on how well a person responds to treatment and exhibits the strength to rejoin their community.
During inpatient rehab at Praxis of South Bend by Landmark Recovery, our patients are given a structured schedule so that they can maintain a daily routine and keep themselves on track. We offer individual counseling, along with group and family therapy plus set mealtimes, recreational activities, and scheduled support meetings for our residents. Our patients find themselves immersed in a supportive environment with other people who are committed to stopping the cycle of addiction and starting their recovery journey.
The steps to enrolling in an inpatient drug and alcohol rehab program are similar amongst most addiction treatment centers.
Admission. This is the first step in inpatient rehab. At Praxis of South Bend by Landmark Recovery, the patient – or their loved one – will contact our admissions team and speak to a representative who will ensure they are admitted to their treatment center properly and that all questions are answered.
Intake. When a patient enters Landmark Recovery’s treatment center, they begin the intake process. Basic information about the patient is gathered at this time. Any forbidden items are confiscated during this point for the safety and wellbeing of the patient, the facility’s staff and other residents.
Each patient is assessed individually by a physician to determine which treatment method will work best for them. Biographical information is also obtained to help create a profile for therapists.
Before enrolling in inpatient treatment, patients may be asked to undergo medical detox, during which they withdraw from their substance under close medical supervision. Medical detox is intended to reduce the risk of physical harm to an individual from the effects of quitting drugs or alcohol after using for a long period of time.
Inpatient Care. Patients normally stay in Landmark Recovery’s residential treatment program for 30-45 days. During residential treatment, our patients follow a daily routine and are given multiple methods of group therapy, individual therapy, and family therapy as well as recreational time. When a patient completes treatment, they are provided with continuing support and resources to prevent relapse.
At Praxis of South Bend by Landmark Recovery, patients should bring:
Items that are prohibited from our treatment centers include any forms of money including cash, cards, etc, drugs or alcohol of any kind (including over the counter medications), and electronics. Landmark does encourage patients to bring along items such as stamps and envelopes for writing to loved ones during your stay, books, photos, pre-packaged snacks, and spiritual or religious items that will bring comfort to you during your stay in our program. Not only does this give the patient something to do during their down time at the center, but it also allows them to plug their creativity into something that can play a huge part in their recovery journey outside of treatment.

So, what is the difference between inpatient rehab and outpatient rehab?
Inpatient rehab is residential treatment, requiring a patient to check themselves into an addiction treatment center for an extended period. Intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment, however, is based outside of a treatment center, allowing an individual to stay in housing of their choice. Intensive outpatient rehab can involve medication-assisted treatment and various forms of counseling. It is often used to treat milder cases of addiction.
