Ecstasy Addiction

To date, research remains inconclusive on whether or not ecstasy is, in fact, addictive according to the National Institute of Drugs and Abuse. However, it targets the same neurotransmitter systems in the brain that other addictive drugs affect. Data from both human trials and animal cohorts do also suggest that prolonged exposure to ecstasy yields adaptations in the brain. The serotonin and dopamine systems have been known to change in ways associated with substance use disorder.

Anecdotal evidence of addiction abounds from users who report legitimate addiction to ecstasy. They attest to being increasingly aware of physical and psychological drawbacks they don’t like yet not being able to stop using. Users also speak of withdrawal, tolerance and cravings.

Intended Use of Ecstasy

MDMA, or Ecstasy, was originally developed in 1912 by Merck as what became a psychotherapy drug by the 1970s. Since the ‘80s, though, it has primarily been used for recreational purposes.

How Ecstasy Is Taken

MDMA can be taken orally and is more often called “Ecstasy” when taken in pill form or “Molly” when in its crystal powder form. If taken orally as a tablet, its effects kick in around about half an hour after taking it, and those effects last anywhere from three to six hours. MDMA can also be snorted, smoked, injected or taken rectally like a suppository.

Abuse Facts

The American Civil Liberties Union has successfully challenged the mandatory-minimum sentencing for Ecstasy to cut down on excessive prison sentences.

The term, Molly, is often used in reference to what's considered a purer form of Ecstasy or MDMA, yet the capsules and powder called by this name actually contain other illegal substances, legal drugs, baking soda, sugar, soap and other household items.
