The first stage of the recovery process often involves undergoing medical detox to flush out all traces of drugs and/or alcohol from your system. It’s highly recommended that detox is overseen by trained clinical staff. Some might be wondering what the process of inpatient rehab admission and the rehab itself is like. Here’s how patients are usually admitted, evaluated, and treated.
Patients or their families will speak to an admissions specialist to ask questions or learn more about the admissions process. Once both parties come to a mutual understanding on all questions, patients will enter the treatment center. This is when patients begin the intake process. Basic information about the patient is gathered and the patient is oriented on the rehab process and rules.
Medical staff will evaluate patients during the intake process to determine their condition and make medical recommendations based off their findings. Doctors build a personal profile for the patient so they can track their treatment and progress throughout their time with us. Detox begins next, where we manage the withdrawals to prevent serious harm to patients as they begin the recovery journey.
Inpatient rehab patients are required to check themselves in, while outpatient rehab patients don’t have to. We require that, pending a doctor’s recommendation, all patients suffering from heavy addictions go through inpatient rehab. This is a firm recommendation we make to properly monitor the medical condition of those detoxing and participating in therapy and counseling. Inpatient rehab is required for those who can’t pass a drug test while participating in outpatient rehab.
After detoxing is finished (usually 5-7 days), patients will then spend 30-45 days taking part in the residential program. While staying at the rehab center, multiple types of therapy will be provided along with recreational time to focus on the self. Once patients finish their residential treatment with us, we provide them with access to continued support through alumni programs and weekly therapy sessions at no cost.
During inpatient rehab at Praxis of Louisville Preston Hwy by Landmark Recovery, you’ll follow a schedule that includes intensive therapy, counseling, and classes to help you achieve sobriety. You’ll have some free time and three meals a day.

In 2018, the Bluegrass State had the ninth-highest drug overdose fatality rate in the United States. There were reportedly 30.9 drug overdose deaths per 100,000 people. Equally important is the ongoing opioid epidemic, which continues to be connected to most drug-related deaths in Kentucky. From 2015-2019, 75% of drug overdose deaths involved an opioid.
Excessive alcohol use has done even more damage to Kentucky communities. In 2019, alcohol-related driving deaths accounted for 20.5% of all Kentucky fatalities. The city of Louisville, responsible for producing one-third of the world’s bourbon supply, posted the nation’s 8th-highest rate of alcohol-impaired deaths in 2018 at 31.3%.
The good news is more Kentucky residents are receiving treatment for substance use disorders. A single-day count from the Behavioral Health Barometer reported that 28,452 people in Kentucky were enrolled in substance use treatment in 2019, an increase from 23,565 people in 2015. Heroin use, especially fatalities, is low compared to other drugs in Kentucky. In 2020, drug overdose deaths involving heroin happened at a rate of 2.48 per 100,000 people. However, emergency department visits due to heroin overdose happened at one of the highest rates in the Bluegrass State. In fact, heroin-involved nonfatal emergency department visits happened at a rate of 83.71 per 100,000 people in 2020.
Kentucky has the fifth-highest opioid dispensing rate in the United States. The Overdose Fatality Report stated that more than 1,964 Kentucky residents died from drug overdoses in 2020. Furthermore, opioid abuse was reportedly found in 71% of those drug overdose deaths. When it comes to the prescription pain relievers like Percocet or codeine, three in 10 (30%) Kentucky adults reported that a family member, friend or themselves experienced problems as a result of opioid abuse.
At one time, cocaine was among the most abused substances in the metropolitan areas of Kentucky. From 1998 to 2000, 16% of all drug addiction treatment admissions were for powdered cocaine abuse. Yes, there are designated areas in our rehab facilities where you can smoke. However, please be advised that all cigarettes brought into the facility must be in unopened packs or cartons. Any cigarettes sent or brought by family/friends must also be unopened. Staff can discuss the rules with you in more detail at admission.
