State of Addiction: Massachusetts

According to research out of Boston Medical Center, nearly 1 in 20 Massachusetts residents have some degree of opioid use disorder. Another report by the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation estimates the opioid epidemic cost roughly $15 billion in losses in 2017.

According to state and federal data:

  • In 2016, the rate of fatal opioid overdoses in Massachusetts was more than twice the national average, standing at roughly 29.7 per 100,000.
  • Since 2012, deaths tied to fatal heroin overdoses have leaped from 246 to 630.
  • More than 11,000 people have died from opioid-related overdoses in the state of Massachusetts in the past decade.
  • In 2017, fatal drug overdoses decreased for the first time in over a decade after reaching peak levels in 2016.

“The opioid epidemic, fueled by an all-time high level of fentanyl, remains a tragic public health crisis responsible for taking too many lives in Massachusetts.”

Inpatient Treatment In Boston

Inpatient treatment at Landmark Recovery of Boston consists of 30 – 45 days of residential stay where patients remain on premises and under Landmark’s medical supervision 24/7. Inpatient treatment is often recommended for individuals suffering from moderate to severe chemical dependency issues, as it provides a safe and supportive environment to get clean, learn the tools to stay sober and create a network of support.

After an initial assessment by intake clinicians, patients may be required to undertake medical detoxification onsite. Our treatment curriculum following detox comprises teaching patients the skills to maintain sobriety, individualized and group therapy sessions to help patients understand the disease of addiction, and open support groups designed to help individuals share their story in a safe and private environment. Here, patients will build a network of support and skills that can last a lifetime. (Image Source)

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, roughly one-third of people who are treated for alcohol problems have no further symptoms one year later. Even more report substantially reducing their drinking and fewer alcohol-related problems. At Landmark Recovery, patients have the ability to participate in a multitude of holistic programs and advanced treatment methods.
