Meth rehab is tough, but Landmark Recovery of Richmond is proud to offer a safe and effective treatment program to help get you back on your feet and live beyond your addiction. Our goal is to save as many lives as possible in the next century, and we want to start here in Virginia and beyond with you or your loved one.
One of the easiest drugs to become addicted to, meth is basically a destroyer of the human body from the beginning of use. Meth is known to rot teeth, destroy brain matter, and cause permanent cognitive decline in users regardless of circumstances. The drug can take a couple of different forms and be snorted, smoked, eaten, or injected. Most meth users smoke the drug, and each method has a different bell curve on length and strength of high.
Since meth destroys certain cells in the brain, users can experience several Alzheimer’s-like symptoms in addition to being at a higher chance of developing Parkinson’s. Meth works by releasing massive amounts of dopamine in the brain and triggering pleasure in the user. Your brain responds to this by working quickly in its euphoric state.
Simultaneously triggering epinephrine and norepinephrine, these produce dangerous effects like increased heart rate and blood pressure. Most drug sessions for meth users consist of binging the drug for days a time, during which the user will go without food and sleep.
In Virginia, the number of drug overdoses is almost double the number of car accidents and gun deaths. This number has risen to a staggering height on the charts in the last 10 years as laced heroin and stronger stimulants hit the black markets. There’s been an unintentionally positive effect on the rate of meth overdoses in the last decade as drug users move from opioids to stimulants to escape the higher chances of being victim to fentanyl overdosing.
While meth use seems quite low statistically, a non-zero percentage of the population in Virginia is still too high. According to SAMHSA, the 2019 count showed that 0.4% of residents over the age of 11 have used meth at least once in the last year, which is a similar rate across more specific age groups. In 2020, meth overdoses increased by a shocking 94%. This is where Landmark’s services come into play for Virginians struggling with substance abuse.
